Applying for Licenses and Endorsements

Upon completion of all of your course requirements, the posting of your degree (if applicable) and earning passing scores on the appropriate licensure/endorsement examinations (if needed), all candidates must apply for their license through the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) application portal. First-time users of the ODE application portal must set up a SAFE account and request a state ID. 

    Set up an ODE SAFE Account.

    1. Go to the ODE SAFE account website.
    2. Click on the Sign Up button.
    3. Complete and submit the SAFE account request form.

    Request a State ID.

    1. Go to the ODE SAFE account website.
    2. Sign into your ODE SAFE account.
    3. Click on the link for ODE.Core.
    4. Click on the Update My Personal Information Option.
    5. Click on the Request State ID button.

     

    To apply for a NEW 4-Year Resident Educator, 5-Year Professional, 5-Year Adminstrator, or 5-Year Pupil Services License

    1. Go to the ODE SAFE account website.
    2. Log into your ODE SAFE account.
    3. Click on the link for ODE.Core.
    4. Click on the Apply for a NEW License, Permit or Certificate option.
    5. Use the menu of license to select the appropriate application type. Click on the Apply button.
    6. Select that you completed A State Of Ohio approved licensure program.
    7. Complete the first page of the application form.
      • Credential = The type of license for which you are applying (e.g. Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Intervention Specialist, etc)
      • Effective Year = The year you want your license to begin
      • Teaching Fields = Concentrations, if applicable
      • Endorsements = only select an endorsement if you are qualifying for the endorsement at the same time as you are qualifying for the license
    8. Click on the Save Application and Next button.
    9. Complete the second page of the application form.
      • Military Service = If yes, your application fee will be waived
      • Educator Preparation Information
        • Click on Ohio College or University
        • Click on the magnifying glass
        • Search for Wright State
        • Select Wright State University, IRN 063123
      • Residency
      • Background Checks
        • If this is your first credential through ODE, background checks must be submitted to ODE within the 12 months prior to your application for licensure
        • Click + symbol to see what background checks ODE has on file
      • Legal Questions
      • Applicant Signature
    10. Click on the Save Application and Next button.
    11. Complete the third page of the application.
      • If this is the first time you are applying for this license/endorsement, you DO NOT need to upload documents
      • The exception to this is if you need to upload documents to confirm your military status
    12. Click on the Save Application and Done button.
    13. Pay the application fee.
      • Click on the check box next to the $ symbol
      • Click on the Pay $$$ for selected Applications button
      • Click on the Click here to Pay $$$ button
      • Select a payment method and complete the payment details
    14. Submit the application.

    NOTE: If you are applying for one of the following licenses, the Office of Student Services needs some additional information:

    • Principal: Provide letter(s) on school letterhead documenting two years teaching under a provisional or professional teaching license at the age levels for which the principal license is sought.
    • Superintendent: Provide letter(s) on school letterhead documenting three years working under a 5-Year Professional Principal license.
    • Curriculum Instruction and Professional Development (CIPD): Provide letter(s) on school letterhead documenting two years teaching under a professional teaching license.

    Please submit supporting documentation to:

    To apply for a NEW Endorsement:

    1. Go to the ODE SAFE account website.
    2. Log into your ODE SAFE account.
    3. Click on the link for ODE.Core.
    4. Click on the Renew, Transition, Add an Area, Extend an RE, or Print My Credential Option.
    5. In the drop-down menu next to your license, select Add an Area.
    6. Click on the Apply button.
    7. Complete the pages of the application form and pay the application fee as detailed above.

    NOTE: If you are applying for one of the following licenses, the Office of Student Services needs some additional information:

    • Teacher Leader: Limited to a professional teaching license or permanent teaching certificate. Provide letter(s) on school letterhead documenting four years teaching under a professional teaching license or permanent teaching certificate.

    Please submit supporting documentation to:

    To RENEW an existing credential or ADVANCE a 4-Year Resident Educator to a 5-Year Professional license:

    1. Go to the ODE SAFE account website.
    2. Log into your ODE SAFE account.
    3. Click on the link for ODE.Core.
    4. Click on the Renew, Transition, Add an Area, Extend an RE, or Print My Credential Option.
    5. In the drop-down menu next to your license, select the appropriate option (Renew, Advance, Align).
    6. Click on the Apply button.
    7. Complete the pages of the application form and pay the application fee as detailed above.
      • On the third page of the application, you may need to upload documents (e.g. transcripts, professional development information) for license renewal

     

     

    Once the Office of Student Services has received your online licensure application, your assigned licensure advisor will review your application materials and your academic records. Upon verification that you meet the requirements for the credential you have requested, we will approve your online licensure application through the Ohio Department of Education website.
